HIGHGATE CENTER – Barbara Lambert Chevalier, beloved wife, mother, grammie, sister, aunt, and friend, age 65, passed away on Friday, July 13, 2018, surrounded by her loving family at her home in Highgate Center. She had battled cancer courageously for two years.

She was born in St. Albans on Feb. 14, 1953, to the late Homer and Lucienne (Laroche) Lambert, the tenth of 13 children. A lifelong resident of Highgate Center, her three younger siblings were her best friends growing up. After graduating from UVM with a degree in early childhood education, Barb married her high school sweetheart, Claude Chevalier of Highgate Springs. Together they raised their three children in the same house where Barb grew up. In this home, Barb became known for her hospitality. She kept the large extended family connected by hosting annual family reunions, Thanksgiving dinners, and other gatherings. However, her hospitality did not stop there, other guests such as missionaries, her children’s friends from across the globe, and many neighbors enjoyed her delicious homemade treats and welcoming nature. She spent countless hours sewing and making beautiful handicrafts that she loved to give away as gifts, and which also graced the walls of her home. Her home extended outdoors to the flower gardens that she tended with care.

Barb also put her degree and skills to use beyond the home as a “professional volunteer” in her church and community. At Church of the Rock, St. Albans, Vt., she shared her love for Jesus by serving as the children’s ministry director for twenty-five years, mentoring in the Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS) group for many years, and leading the women’s ministries later in life. In the community, while her children were young, she volunteered at the Highgate Elementary School and led story hour at the Highgate Public Library. Recently, she served on the planning commission for the Town of Highgate. Barbara will be remembered as a woman of deep love, faith, compassion, and generosity—a true servant and Proverbs 31 woman. Her husband and children arise and call her blessed. She will be missed tremendously, but the family takes heart in the promise of eternal life offered through Jesus Christ in whom Barb put her hope.

She is survived by her husband, Claude Chevalier of Highgate Center; their children, Adam Chevalier and his wife Kelly of Lynn, Mass., Laura Chevalier of Highgate Center, and Jonathan Chevalier and his wife Erin of Lynn, Mass.; five grandchildren, Ethan, Emma, Jackson, Juliet, and Alivia; her siblings, Raymond Lambert and his partner Ellen, Dorothy McGrath, Henry Lambert and his wife Molly, Anna Lambert, Mary Chapman and her partner Edward, Ruth Lambert, Edward Lambert and his partner Susan, Louis Lambert and his wife Susan, Rita Lavallee and her husband Peter, Steven Lambert and his wife Alana, and Michael Lambert and his wife Wendy; brother-in-law, Alfred Columb; her nieces and god-daughters Heather Bessette and Jessica Remmey, numerous other nieces and nephews, several aunts and uncles, and many brothers- and sisters-in-law and cousins. Besides her parents, Barbara was predeceased by her sister, Catherine Columb, three nieces, many aunts and uncles, and several in-laws.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, July 17, 2018, from 5–8 p.m. at Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton.

BURLINGTON- Donald A. Brown, educator, fly fisherman, music lover, master furniture re-finisher, and raconteur, died at VNA Vermont Respite House on May 27, 2018. Don was born on Oct. 26, 1927 at the Fanny Allen Hospital in Colchester to Isabelle Duprat Brown and Victor Pierre Brown during the Great Flood of 1927. When it was time to return home to Burlington after his birth, his mother had to cross the Winooski River by boat.  He was the youngest of three siblings, Leola Hebert and Robert V. Brown, both of whom pre-deceased him.

Don was raised in the Old North End of Burlington, where he made many lifelong friends. He was a Boy Scout and learned many of his outdoor skills in the woods in Underhill. He was proud to have earned his Eagle Scout rank.  He spent summers working as a lifeguard and winters playing in the snow. He attended the Nazareth School and graduated from Burlington High School, where he was selected as “Best Looking in the Class.”

After stints in both the Navy and the Army, Don attended the University of Vermont and started his teaching career in Shoreham. It was during that time that he met his future wife, Dorothy Seale, a nurse at the Mary Fletcher Hospital. After their marriage, he taught in Hinesburg, and then went to graduate school at Syracuse University.

Don’s career path was focused on education. He was a well loved and respected vice principal and principal in Winooski, Burlington and St. Albans, Vt.  He was known for his ability to listen and was considerate of others’ opinions, even if they differed from his own. He brought a sense of fun and playfulness to his work life.

Don had a long held love of the outdoors; he was an avid fisherman and occasional hunter. Through him his family learned to love camping and hiking. A trip to Alaska was a big influence on his life. He had profound respect for the environment and loved all living things, especially the birds, chipmunks and squirrels he fed all year round.

Don also loved music and was a volunteer for the Vermont Symphony Orchestra for many summers. His family was amazed at the range of his musical appreciation that ran from Super Tramp to Rachmaninoff. Don also was a talented craftsman. As the owner with his son Mark of Things Unlimited for years, he had an eye for old furniture and had the ability to repair and restore his finds. Notable was his talent in caning and rushing chairs – he won many first prize awards for his work and now leaves a legacy of work for his family and friends.

Don was a father to three children: Mark V. Brown (deceased), Faith Brown, and Martha Brown, who with their partners Lynn Mansfield and Rob Donaldson miss him terribly. Mark’s wife Patricia Brown and Mark’s children Tabatha Soliz and Joseph Brown survive Don. Don’s family gives special thanks to his

Best friend for 40 years, Renie Zaneloni, who was a critical support to him throughout his life but especially for him in his last years.

Don’s family also wishes to thank Dr. Jania Clough, Ally Parker, Tom Paquette, Sharon Keegan, the staff at Vermont Respite House and Dr. Mark Pitcher. A grateful mention goes to Susan Abel for her help with the writing of this obituary. A memorial service and internment is planned for Oct. 27 at Mount Calvary Annex Cemetery in Burlington, Vt.
