Justin Joseph ‘Turtle’ Lussier

FAIRFIELD — Justin Joseph “Turtle” Lussier a lifelong resident of this area passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, June 21, 2017.

Born in St. Albans on May 11, 1982, he was the son of Michel Lussier and Sylvia D. Minor. Justin was 35 years old.

Justin was educated at St. Francis Xavier School in Winooski and Bellows Free Academy and at the time of his passing he was a machinist at Superior Technical Ceramics. He was an avid outdoorsman, whether it was hunting, riding his four-wheeler or his horse, and enjoyed being on his motorcycle.

Survivors include his father, Michel, of Fairfield; his mother, Sylvia, of Wimauma, Fla.; his sister and her husband, Therese and Neal Burgoyne of Churubusco, N.Y. and always at his side, his cherished dog, Rusty.

He is also survived by his aunts and uncles, Jacques and Marcelle Lussier of St. Albans; Albert Tetreault of Fairfield; Nicole Paine of Wells, Maine; Estelle and John Quintin of North Hero; Micheline and Earle Goodno of Candia, N.H.; Claire and Roger Rainville of Alburgh and numerous cousins.

Justin was pre-deceased by his godmother, Jacqueline Tetreault and his uncles, Real Lussier and Michael Paine.

Justin’s family will greet family and friends on Monday, June 26, 2017, from 4 – 8 p.m. at the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main Street, St. Albans.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, June 27, at 1:30 p.m. at Holy Angels Catholic Church, 245 Lake Street, St. Albans. Interment will be at a later date in Mount Calvary Cemetery.

Wyman R. ‘Bud’ Ovitt, Jr.

ST. ALBANS — Wyman R. “Bud” Ovitt, Jr. a lifelong area resident passed away Wednesday, June 21, 2017, at the Franklin County Rehab Center surrounded by his family.

Born in St. Albans on Dec. 21, 1931, the son of the late Wyman R. and Beatrice (Flanagan) Ovitt, Bud was 85 years old.

Bud began his career with the Central Vermont Railroad in October 1948. Throughout his career he held various jobs, retiring in June 1991 as a brakeman.

Bud joined the United States Army at the age of 18 and received his Honorable Discharge on July 15, 1952. He was a longtime communicant of St. Mary’s Parish. He belonged to the American Legion and Champlain Country Club. Athletics were a large part of Bud’s life, playing on several local sports teams throughout his childhood and adulthood, including area softball and bowling leagues. He was an outstanding athlete, especially on the softball field as a pitcher. His passion for sports led him to become one of BFA-St. Albans’ biggest fans and supporters, following their athletic teams every fall, winter and spring.

Bud’s love and dedication to his family have left a huge mark on their hearts, and one of the things they will miss most is his gift for making each person feel special. He was extremely generous to all of those in his family. One of his best qualities was his sense of humor, which he shared with everyone throughout his life.

Survivors include his siblings, Marilyn Toof of St. Albans, Vt.; Patricia Toth of Biloxi, Miss.; John (Elisabeth) Ovitt of Bluffton, S.C.; Sandra (Charles) Yessian of Newington, Conn.; Robert (Brenda) Ovitt of Russellville, Ala.

Bud is also survived by his very special niece and nephew, Wendy and Brian Richard of Milton, Vt. and “Grandchildren of his Heart,” Kevin (Lauren) Richard of Colchester, Vt. and Hilary (Jerry) Carter of Essex Junction, Vt. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Susan Ovitt of Atlanta, Ga. and former sister-in-law, Michele Ovitt of St. Albans, Vt., as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents, Bud was predeceased by his brother, Thomas Ovitt and brother-in-law, Ronald Toof.

Bud’s family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff at the Franklin County Rehab Center as well as Katy Lemery and the staff at Homestead Assisted Living Facility for all of their compassion and support over the past several years.

Bud’s family will greet family and friends on Sunday, June 25, 2017, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main Street, St. Albans.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, June 26, 2017, 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 45 Fairfield Street, St. Albans with the Reverend Joseph Ikegbunam as celebrant. Interment with Military Honors will follow at the family lot in Holy Cross Cemetery.

ST. ALBANS — Edna A Silversten a longtime area resident passed away Friday June 16, 2017, at the St. Albans Healthcare and Rehab Center.

Born in Worcester, Mass., on June 27, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Alfred and Sigrid (Eastman) Silversten. Edna was 88 years old.

She was a member of the Burlington North Congregation of the Jehovah Witness in Colchester and longtime Bible Educator.

Survivors include her sister, Anna Holmes; her niece, Linda Lazarski and her husband, Brian, and their son, Matthew, all of St. Albans, as well as an uncle, Kenneth Eastman and niece, Sherry Hawes.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, June 25, 2017, at 7 p.m. at the Kingdom Hall of the Jehovah’s Witness, 82 Swanton Road, Swanton.

 

MARIE-JEANNE GERTRUDE BENOIT

SHELDON — Marie-Jeanne Gertrude Benoit, age 90 years, died peacefully Thursday afternoon, June 22, 2017, at her home on Crowe Hill in Sheldon.

Born at home in Highgate by Morses Line on April 11, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Henri and Mae (Demers) Rainville. She attended schools in Highgate and Holy Angels Commercial School in St. Albans, followed by a noviciate in Clayton, N.Y. in 1949 to become a catholic religious sister, from which she returned home for reasons of health. In a change of vocation, she was married on Aug. 22, 1953, to Marcel Herman Benoit and became the devoted mother to their five children.

Prior to marriage, Marie-Jeanne worked for the C.P. Smith Company in Burlington, then after marriage for the George Yett Bag Factory in Swanton, until she started her family. In 1957, Marcel and Marie-Jeanne made a leap of faith to purchase the old Robert Crowe farm in Sheldon, where they worked side-by-side to make it a success. She contributed her labor, bookkeeping skills, and considerable talents as gardener, cook and baker. Besides caring for a growing family, she served her church as a religious education teacher and a member of the Ladies of St. Anne of St. Anthony Church in Sheldon Springs.

She was predeceased by her husband Marcel and leaves their five children, Gilbert (Lindsay) Highgate Springs, Lucie Holcomb of S. Burlington, Conrad (Suzette) of Sheldon, Leon (Linda) of Sheldon and Julian (Dawnna) stationed with the U.S. Army at Fort Carson, Colo.

Marie-Jeanne leaves her brother Joachim and wife Lorraine of Highgate, sister Theresa Begnoche and husband Marcel of Highgate, sisters in-law Monique Rainville of Franklin; Georgette Benoit of Ste. Armand, Quebec; Therese Potvin of Farnham, Quebec; Lucille Benoit of Bedford, Quebec; Francoise Benoit of Ste. Jean, Quebec and Francoise Benoit of Mont Ste. Hillaire, Quebec, and also her brothers-in-law Andre Laroche of St. Albans; Jacques Benoit of Ste. Jean, Quebec and Richard Benoit of Mont Ste. Hillaire, Quebec. Also, she leaves 14 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, two step-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Marie-Jeanne is also predeceased by brothers Norbert and Lucien, sisters Cecile Bouchard, Bernadette Tremblay, and Mae Anne Laroche, sisters-in-law Madeleine Rainville and Denise Benoit, and brothers-in-law Paul Bouchard, Hector Tremblay, Clement Benoit, Alfred Benoit, Rodrigue Benoit and Romuald Potvin.

Marie-Jeanne’s family wishes to give special thanks to her caregivers Elaine Reed, MarieAnne West, Michele and Donna Jutras, Lori Derry, Angela St. Pierre and Ashley Rooney, as well as to all the wonderful hospice ladies who were so helpful.

The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, June 26, 2017, at 11 a.m. from Saint Louis Roman Catholic Church, 186 Lamkin Street in Highgate Center. Marie-Jeanne’s cousin Father Marcel R. Rainville, SSE will be the celebrant and homilist. The Rite of Committal and Interment will follow at the Benoit family lot in Saint Louis Cemetery. A luncheon will follow at Saint Louis Church.

Friends may call at The Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue in Swanton on Sunday, June 25, from 4 to 8 p.m.

DEANNA H. KENDRICK

ST. ALBANS — Deanna H. Kendrick, 80, passed away peacefully Wednesday June 21, 2017 at Big Bend Hospice after a lengthy illness.

Deanna was born in Belleville, Ontario, June 9, 1937, the daughter of Patricia and Harry Halsey. She graduated from the Royal Victoria School of Nursing in Montreal in 1957, and started her nursing career at Mary Fletcher Hospital in Burlington, Vt. She worked for pediatricians in St. Albans, eventually retiring from Mousetrap Pediatrics. Deanna enjoyed bridge, and was an avid tennis player and golfer.

Deanna was pre-deceased by her parents, sister, Susan, and her husband of 58 years, John.

Surviving Deanna are her son, John Halsey Kendrick, daughter, Heidi Sieloff and her husband, Eliot, and grandchildren, Benjamin and Allison.

Carlton Leon Graves

FAIRFIELD — Carlton Leon Graves a lifelong Franklin County resident passed away, Tuesday, June 27, 2017, at the Franklin County Rehab Center surrounded by his family.

Born on May 15, 1930, in St. Albans Town, he was the son of the late Guy and Louise (Gould) Graves. Carlton was 87 years old.

On Sept. 2, 1950, he married Joyce Underwood at her parent’s farm on the Bushey Road. Joyce and Carlton were married for 66 and a half years.

Carlton was a 1948 graduate of Bellows Free Academy and served in the Vermont National Guard. For many years he operated his own dairy farm while employed by the Central Vermont Railway. He started his 39-year railroad career in 1952 as a fireman on steam engines and retired as an engineer on Amtrak. He was a 50-year member of the Local United Transportation Union where he held the position of general chairman for many years.

Carlton was a member of the First Baptist Church of St. Albans for 66 years, where he served on the Board of Deacons and as Chairman of the Board of Trustees for many years.

He was also a member of the Fairfield Historical Society and served as a lister and tax collector for the town of Fairfield for several years. He was known for his collection of antique tractors, which he spent many enjoyable hours restoring and was always excited to talk about their history.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce, of Fairfield; their children, Leon Graves and his wife, Amy, of Marcellus, New York, Lisa Griswold and her husband, Kerry, of Fairfax, Reverend Larry Graves and his wife, Kathy, of West Des Moines, Iowa and Jeffrey Graves and his wife, Carla, of Durant, Iowa, as well as 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Alvin Graves of Florida and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Carlton was pre-deceased by his sons, Stephen and David and by one brother and three sisters.

Carlton’s family will receive family and friends on Friday, June 30, 2017, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main Street, St. Albans.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 1, 2017, at 1 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of St. Albans, 29 Congress Street, St. Albans. Pastor William Simmons will officiate. Interment will follow in the family lot in the St. Albans Bay Cemetery. You are invited to join friends and family for a reception at the St. Paul’s United Methodist Church on Church Street, St. Albans.

HIGHGATE/FAIRFIELD — Sarah Marie Mahoney, a lifelong resident of this area, passed away unexpectedly Thursday June 29, 2017, at her home in Highgate.

Born in St. Albans on July 4, 1978, she was the daughter of LeRoy W. and Marie (Martell) Hughes. Sarah was 38 years old.

Sarah graduated from Bellows Free Academy and enjoyed playing bingo, snowmobiling and doing crafts.

Survivors include her parents, LeRoy and Marie of Fairfield; her children Mercedes Mahoney of Fairfield and Ayden Paradee of Chelsea; her grandson, Maximilliam White as well as her brothers, LeRoy Hughes of Springfield and Andrew Hughes and his fiancé, Tiffany and her son, Karter, of Swanton and sister, Vicky Lamotte and her husband, Joe, of St. Albans and their children, Hanna and Joseph.

Sarah is also survived by several aunts, uncles, cousins and her former husband, Daniel Mahoney of Swanton.

She was predeceased by her grandparents, David and Alice Martell and Mitchell and Virginia Hughes.

Sarah’s family will receive family and friends on Saturday, July 8, 2017, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main Street, St. Albans.

A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 12:30 p.m. at Holy Angels Catholic Church, 245 Lake Street, St. Albans with the Reverend Maurice J. Roy as celebrant.

Regina M. Bombard

SHELDON — Miss Regina M. Bombard, age 74, passed away Tuesday evening, June 27, 2017, at the Northwestern Medical Center. She was born in Boston, Mass., Feb. 14, 1943, daughter of the late Herbert and Loretta (Viens) Bombard. Regina worked as a chambermaid for the Champlain Motel and as a custodian for the Marshall Center and Bellows Free Academy. She was a communicant of St. Mary’s and Holy Angels Church. Regina enjoyed bird watching, traveling, puzzles, coloring, visiting with friends and animals.

Regina is survived by her caregivers Rachel, Paul and Jason Slater, her best friends, Walter and Warren Brown, and many other friends throughout our community. She was predeceased by her father Herbert in 1980 and her mother in 1995.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, July 7, 2017, at 11 a.m. in St. Mary’s Church with Father Joseph Ikegbunam celebrating. Interment will follow in the Bombard family lot in St. Ann’s Cemetery, Milton. Paul Philip Ruais

ST. ALBANS — Paul Philip Ruais, a resident of this area for the past two years, passed away peacefully Sunday, July 2, 2017, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Methuen, Mass. on Aug. 10, 1955, the son of the late Joseph Philippe and Doris (Ouellette) Ruais. Paul was 61 years old.

On Dec. 10, 1988, he married Alice Hergenrother, who survives him.

Paul graduated from Central Catholic High School in Lawrence, Mass. He then entered the United States Air Force receiving his honorable discharge in June of 1978. He then entered University of Massachusetts Boston, where he received a Bachelor’s Degree of Science in Administration.

He had a long career and was integral part of the Information Technology team at Boston University, where he retired as data base administrator.

He is survived by his wife, Alice, of St. Albans; their two daughters and spouses, Michelle Racine and Steve Davis, and Pamela and Nathan Willett, as well as his grandchildren, Sabrina and Christopher, Patrick, Alex, Zak, Sage and Zander and great-grandchildren, Colton, Shelby, Caidence, Cecelia and Carter.

Paul is also survived by his brothers and their wives, Ronald and Michelle Ruais, Robert and Phyliss Ruais, Richard and Karen Ruais; his sisters and their husbands, Pauline and Donald Groele and Rita and Norman Beauchesne; his sister-in-law, Nancy Ruais and 16 nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Paul was preceded in death by his brother, Raymond Ruais.

Paul’s family will receive family and friends on Saturday, July 8, 2017, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main Street, St. Albans.

A Mass of Christian Burial and interment will be held at a later date at Holy Rosary Parish and Cemetery in Hooksett, New Hampshire.

Shirley Catherine (Benway) Greenia

HIGHGATE CENTER — Shirley Catherine (Benway) Greenia, age 76, passed away Saturday evening July 1, 2017 at Our Lady of The Meadows in Richford, Vt. with her family by her side. Born on Feb. 12, 1941 in Clarenceville, Quebec. The daughter of the late Charles Abel Benway and Florence Catherine Shedrick. She married the love of her life Louis W. Greenia Jr. on Aug. 20, 1960 and then moved to Highgate and started her family. A devoted wife, mother and grandmother who loved spending time with her family, Shirley will always be remembered for her love of playing bingo, gardening, going to lawn sales with her sister Florence, playing cards and watching her favorite television shows.

She is survived by her husband Louis W Greenia Jr. of 56 years and five children.

Cindy (David) Lumbra of Fairfax, Matthew (Dee) Greenia of Franklin, Louis (Tammy) Greenia, Bonnie (Ronald) Messier of Highgate and Sherry Greenia of St. Albans. Her 13 grandchildren, Katherine, Dallas, Dylan, David II and Kayleigh Lumbra of Fairfax, Joshua and Paige Greenia Franklin, Leo (Crystal) Messier Highgate, Bobbie-Jo Dion, Billie-Jo Rocque, Patrick Plattner, Justin and Nathan Robtoy. Her brothers and sisters Mabel (Leo) Dion, Alberta (Omer) Dion, Marty and Steven Benway all of Quebec, Joanne (Robert) Boyd of Prince Edward Island, Betty Benway, Charles (Naomi) Benoit, Mark (Barb) Benway, Albert (Maggie) Benway all from Ontario, brother-in-laws Mark Greenia Sr and Harold Greenia, sister-in-law Doris Cotnoir all of Swanton, Many nieces and nephews in Vermont and Canada.

She was predeceased her parents Charles Benway and Florence Shedrick, her infant son Rocky Allen at the age of four months in 1962. Three sisters, Florence Tedford Greenia, Mary Benoit and Melody Benway. Her father and mother-in-law Louis W. Sr. and Florence (Minkler) Greenia , four brother-in-laws Douglass, Leon and Merrill Greenia and Arthur Cotnoir and three sister-in-laws Beverley Delisle, Margaret Bockus and Joanne Mitchell.

There will be no calling hours or services. A memory luncheon will be held in Shirley’s Memory at her home that she shared with her husband Louis on Saturday July 22 at 1 p.m. 726 Lamkin Street, Highgate Center, VT 05459.

Lorette M. Rillo

HIGHGATE CENTER — Lorette Marie “Blondie” Rillo, 87, a long-time resident of Lower Graniteville, later of Ellerbe, N.C. and more recently making her home with her daughter, Edith, in Highgate Center, died Thursday, June 29, 2017 at The Arbors in Shelburne. Her family had been at her bedside.

Born July 4, 1929, in St. Agathe, province of Quebec, Canada, she was the daughter of Albert and Marie (Isabelle) Lambert. She had attended school in New Britain, Conn. and the former Holy Ghost Elementary School in Graniteville.

On Dec. 3, 1949 she married Jerry P. Rillo at the Sacred Heart Church in Vailsburg, N.J. Following their marriage they made their home in Lower Graniteville and Ellerbe, N.C. Following Jerry’s death in July 2002, she returned to Vermont.

Lorette had worked at the former Rock of Ages Capacitor Plant in Barre City and later at the Barre Town School cafeteria.

She enjoyed card playing, gardening, playing the banjo and entertaining her family at her home.

An active practitioner of her faith, Lorette had belonged to St. Sylvester Catholic Church in Graniteville and St. James Catholic Church of Ellerbe, N.C. and their altar societies and St. Louis Catholic Church in Highgate Center.

Survivors include her daughter Edith Rillo of Highgate Center and sons Jerry Rillo Jr., and his wife, Kathy of Candor, N.C. and Frank Rillo and his wife, Beth of Barre City as well as eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

She also leaves three sisters; Irene Nay of Apopka, Fla., Sister Anita Lambert DHS, of Putnam, Conn.; and Pauline Guilfoyle and her husband, Ronald of Christmas, Fla. and her brother Maurice Lambert and his wife, Janet of Winter Haven, Fla. and sister-in-law Anita Lambert of Weekiwachee, Fla. and numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband Jerry, she was predeceased by her grandson David Rillo, her sister Dolores Gagnon and husband, George and brothers Richard and Raymond Lambert and his wife, Theresa.

The Mass of Christian Burial to honor Lorette’s life will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 12, 2017 at 11 a.m. in St. Sylvester Catholic Church in Graniteville.

Inurnment will follow in St. Sylvester Cemetery beside her beloved husband, Jerry.

Friends may call on Tuesday at the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy Street, Barre from 6 to 8 p.m.

Christine Mary ‘Cookie’ Barratt

SWANTON — Christine Mary “Cookie” Barratt, age 63 years, died unexpectedly Monday, July 3, 2017, at her Laroe Street residence.

Born in St. Albans on, Dec. 28, 1953, she was the daughter of the late Raymond and Esther (Barratt) Young. She graduated from Missisquoi Valley Union High School in 1972 and on, December 10, 1977, was married to Brian “Butch” Barratt who survives her.

A lifelong resident of this area she was active in the Abenaki Nation of Missisquoi and was well known for her excellence in craft making and was a master at basket weaving. In earlier years Cookie worked for the former Columb’s Bakery.

In addition to her husband Butch of Swanton, Cookie leaves two sons, Matthew Barratt of Swanton and Brad Barratt of Williston; a very special granddaughter whom she was raising, Krista Ross Barratt; mother-in-law, Rose Barratt; brothers, Ronnie Young Sr., and wife Sally and Raymond Young, Jr.; a sister, Judy and husband Bob Morris; brother-in-law, James Hoose and sister-in-law Joyce Hoose and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by a sister, Sandra Gaudette, father-in-law, Leonard Barratt and brother Maurice Young.

A Funeral Service will be held Friday, July 21, 2017, at 11 a.m. from The Kidder Memorial Home. The Reverend Anne Torrance Bachman will officiate. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday evening, July 20, 2017 from 7 to 9 p.m.

ST. ALBANS — Mrs. Anna Seguin Lanoue, age 89, lifelong resident of St. Albans, passed away peacefully Wednesday evening, Jan. 18, 2017, as a resident of the Kings Daughters Home. She was born in Burlington, June 5, 1927 daughter of the late Eugene and Orena (Fleury) Seguin. She graduated from B.F.A. in 1946 where she was remembered as a great cheerleader, majorette and a member of the B.F.A choir. She was a member of the Ladies of St. Anne, Retired Central Vermont Veterans Auxiliary, V.F.W. and American Legion Auxiliaries. Anna enjoyed working at several local businesses, Ferland’s Market, Doubleday Furniture Store, and our favorite Western Auto Store on Main Street, where many of our Christmases came from! She married Reginald C. Lanoue, Nov. 28, 1946. Reggie and Anna enjoyed many fun vacations with their many friends. We as their children, experienced many family vacations. After Reggie’s retirement, they moved to Florida where they resided for fourteen wonderful years. They returned to Vermont in 2000. Anna lost the love of her life, Reggie, on July 7, 2002. Her daughter Sue looked after her mom and made her comfortable in her home and cared for her for six years. Anna spent a lot of time at Care Partners during the week so Sue could work. She had two wonderful caregivers Stacy Gaudette and Linda Hobb who helped with her care at home. She had lived with her caretaker Diane Beauguard for one year before that. We were very fortunate in 2014, Kings Daughter’s received mom as a tenant at their beautiful home for ladies. This is where mom had the best care after living with Sue. She absolutely loved it there. Anna spent a lot of time enjoying bingo and cards, which were her favorite pastimes. Anna was there for three years and passed there with her family by her side and the loving care of their wonderful staff.

Anna is survived by her children, Rodney (Skip) Lanoue and his wife Debbie Elwood Lanoue of Orange City, Fla., David Lanoue and Robert Lanoue both of St. Albans, William Lanoue and his wife Julie of Orange City, Fla., her two daughters Debra French and her husband William of Hepzibah, Ga., and Susan Lanoue and her life partner Joe Olio of St. Albans, nine grandsons, two granddaughters, 17 great-grandchildren, one great-greatgrandchild, a brother-in-law Joe of St Albans, and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her son Gary Lanoue, her daughters-in-law Helen Lanoue and Nancy Lanoue, her brothers Albert, James, Harold and Eugene Seguin, her sisters Sister Margaret Mary Seguin, Mary White, and special friends Raymond and Sylvia Patenaude.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on the fifteenth anniversary of Reggie’s funeral, July 11, 2017 at 10 a.m., in Holy Angels Church. Interment will follow in the Lanoue family lot in Mount Calvary Cemetery. There will be no visiting hours. Mary Jane ‘Chickie’ (Taft) White

SHELDON — Mary Jane “Chickie” (Taft) White a lifelong resident of this area passed away unexpectedly, Sunday July 2, 2017, at the UVM Medical Center, surrounded by her loving family.

Born in St. Albans on March 12, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Eugene and Orena (Fleury) Sequin. Chickie was 82 years old.

She was first married to Henry E. Taft, who pre-deceased her on June 2, 1987 and then on July 4, 1990, she married Joseph K. White, who survives her.

Chickie was a 1954 graduate of Bellows Free Academy and was a longtime associate with Bertek and then Mylan. For many years she was also associated with Tom’s Lounge on the corner of Federal and Kingman Streets. She enjoyed listening to country music, was an avid Yankee’s fan and Chickie was an accomplished pool player.

Chickie is survived by her husband of 26 years, Joe, of Sheldon; her sons, Michael Taft and his wife, Therese, of Hoosick Falls, New York, James Taft of St. Albans and Thomas Taft and his wife, Lorna, of Franklin and her grandchildren, Brandon, Aisling, Devin, Chelsey Gagne and her husband, Eric, and Natalie, as well as her great-grandchild, Emrey Gagne.

She is also survived by her step-children, Chris White and his wife, Darcie, Amy Payne and her husband, Michael, and Angel and Gopichand Vallabhaneni and step-grandchildren, Shane and his son, Avery, Graham, Phoebe, Marissa, Choudari, Mohini and Roma and a special friend, Lise Dexter.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Henry, Chickie was preceded in death by her brothers, William, Albert, James, Harold, Eugene Sequin and her sisters, Sister Margaret Mary Sequin and more recently, Anna Sequin Lanoue on Jan. 18, 2017.

A Mass of Christian Burial for both Chickie and Anna Lanoue will be celebrated on Tuesday, July 11, 2017, at 10 a.m. at Holy Angels Catholic Church, 245 Lake Street, St. Albans. Interment for Chickie will be at a later date at the Taft family lot in the Village Cemetery in Hinesburg.
